The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest & one of the most important campaigns of WWII. Defeating the U-boat threat was vital if Britain was to maintain her supplies of food, munitions & raw materials. It was also essential in facilitating the build-up of Allied forces in preparation for the D-Day invasion.
More than 1,000 convoys arrived in Liverpool during the war & the port became home to Western Approaches Command from February 1941. In the reinforced basement of Derby House the movements of convoys & U-boat wolf packs were closely monitored in the Map Room.
