Cambrai 100th Anniversary

Cambrai, 20th November, 1917: The entire Tank Corps consisting of more than 400 tanks achieved great success in the initial phase of the Battle of Cambrai. The German lines were over-run as the tanks broke upon them out of the early morning mist. The British had achieved that rarity on the Western Front – complete surprise. The possibility of a crushing victory was, however, fleeting. Everything had been staked on the initial effort with no reserves available either to consolidate or exploit. The Germans regained their balance and brought up no less than eighteen divisions by rail as well as further reserves by road for their counter-attack.
