Hadrian’s Wall is the best preserved frontier of the Roman Empire. It took 15,000 men, six years to build it with work commencing in 122 AD following Emperor Hadrian’s visit to Britain. Its purpose was twofold; to control frontier access to the Empire & to defend the north of the Roman province from raiders. The Wall was defended by milecastles placed at regular intervals. Two towers or turrets were built between each milecastle. Larger forts were positioned every seven miles along its entire length.
The defences were supplemented by ditches either side of the Wall. The ditch to the south became known as the Vallum & a number of settlements grew up behind the Wall to service the garrison. Hadrian’s Wall today not only provides an insight into Roman military & civil planning but also the life of the auxiliaries who manned it for nearly three centuries.
