Somme, Arras & Vimy Ridge (3 Days)

The Somme, 1st July, 1916, 07.30 hours: The men of Rawlinson’s Fourth Army rose from their trenches and began to climb the gently sloping gradient towards the German lines on the Somme. As this force, composed predominantly of Kitchener volunteers, advanced heavy machine-gun fire swept No Man’s Land. Within minutes 20,000 men fell; by the end of the day, nearly 60,000 were casualties. Belief in a breakthrough gave way to endurance in the face of attritional warfare. Meanwhile, on the other side of No Man’s Land, the Somme was to become “the muddy grave of the German Army.”

In contrast, the Canadian Corps achieved a dramatic success in its assault on Vimy Ridge on Easter Monday, 1917 during the opening phase of the Battle of Arras. After months of meticulous planning, training, air reconnaissance, tunnelling and mining the defences were overwhelmed and the Germans driven from positions hitherto considered impregnable.
